In 1964, she published her most famous work, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of a young woman's struggle with mental illness, drawing on Greenberg's own experiences working in a psychiatric hospital and her friendship with a patient named Hannah Green. The novel, praised for its candid portrayal of mental illness and the therapeutic process, became a bestseller and has been translated into multiple languages.
