Julian May was an American science fiction and fantasy author best known for her Saga of Pliocene Exile and Galactic Milieu series. Born on July 10, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, May demonstrated a love for storytelling from an early age. She pursued her passion for writing throughout her life, eventually becoming one of the most respected and influential authors in the genre. May's literary career began in the 1950s, when she worked as a copywriter and editor for various advertising agencies and publishing houses. During this time, she also began writing science fiction and fantasy stories, publishing her first short story, Dune Roller, in 1951.

In 1952, May married Theodore Dikty, an editor and science fiction enthusiast, who encouraged her to pursue her writing career full-time. Over the next few decades, she published numerous short stories and novels, establishing herself as a prolific and versatile author. May's breakthrough came in 1981 with the publication of The Many-Colored Land, the first novel in her Saga of Pliocene Exile series. Set in a future where time travel is possible, the series follows a group of humans who travel back in time to the Pliocene era and become embroiled in a conflict with powerful alien races. The success of the Saga of Pliocene Exile series led to the publication of the Galactic Milieu series, which further explored the themes of psychic powers, evolution, and interspecies conflict. May's works were praised for their intricate world-building, compelling characters, and thought-provoking themes.

Throughout her career, May received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the science fiction and fantasy genres, including multiple Hugo and Nebula Award nominations. She was also a founding member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and a beloved figure within the science fiction community. Julian May passed away on October 17, 2017, but her legacy as one of the most imaginative and accomplished authors in science fiction and fantasy literature lives on. Her novels continue to captivate readers with their richly imagined worlds, complex characters, and profound exploration of the human condition.
